Holy Forefather Abraham Orthodox Icon
Abrah, which God named Abraham, means "father of a multitude" or "father of many nations."
"Now the Lord said to Abram, “Go from your country and kindred and your father’s house to the land that I will show you. And I will make you a great nation, and make your name great, so that you will be a blessing . . . and in you all families of the earth shall be blessed†Genesis 12:1-3
Abraham is also mentioned in the New Testament in relation to the sacrifice of his son Isaac.
"Was not Abraham our father justified by works, when he offered his son Isaac upon the altar? You see that faith was active along with his works, and faith was completed by works, and the scripture was fulfilled which says, “Abraham believed God, and it was reckoned to him as righteousness;†and he was called the friend of God. You see that a man is justified by works and not by faith alone" James 2:21-24
