Original antique icon of St. Tikhon of Kaluga
This icon of St. Tikhon of Kaluga was painted in the 19th century. Both splines are still in place and there is minimal curvature effecting the panel.  The icon has been cleaned (varnish removed) and touch up work has been applied where there was previous paint loss, new varnish has been applied. Â
One cannot fully state the rarity of this icon. Â I have come across very few examples of St. Tikhon for sale in my many years of dealing with icons and this one is, by far, the best I have seen to date. Â Not only is the overall composition very pleasing, but it is also in a large size.Â
St. Tikhon struggled in asceticism during the 15th century in the Kaluga region (the same region in which the famous Optina Pustyn is located) and chose to live in the hollow of a giant oak tree, as is clearly illustrated in this icon. Â
