Original antique icon of The Holy Prophet Elijah
This icon of the Holy Prophet Elijah was painted late 18th - early 19th century.  As a point of interest, the icon comes with the original sales ticket from La Caucase: Fine Antiques and Russian Art in Santa Monica California.  It was purchased in 1991 for $2250.00 and had a list price of $2750.00.  The icon at this time was listed as 17th century, but I believe this to be a mistake.  Rather the icon belongs the late 18th - early 19th century and has been restored using the "under ivory" technique (which often makes icons appear much earlier than they actually are).  This particular technique of "restoration" uses solvents to remove the background paint and reveal the ivory colored gesso grounds.  To be honest, such technique is very desirable and does, certainly, add a very nice effect to antique Russian icons.   It is also noteworthy to mention that some of the gesso grounds on the face of the icon have been worn down and reveal the wooden panel itself, overall contributing to a beautiful aesthetic.  The painting itself is in fantastic shape and denotes quality work.  The varnish is near perfect (most likely revarnished at the time of restoration) and is probably a worn shellac.  The panel is completely stable with both splines in place on the reverse. This would be a great addition to any home icon corner or for use in a parish where many faithful could appreciate such a lovely icon.
Holy Prophet Elijah, pray to God for us.
